To further expand and clarify this observation about the excellence of our local health care, let me point out that the University of Virginia School of Nursing is ranked by U.S. News & World Report at #19 among the 448 nursing schools in the country that offer graduate programs, placing the School among the nation’s top 5%. Two of the School’s Clinical Nurse Specialist graduate programs are in the Top Ten (Psychiatric/Mental Health and Adult-Medical/Surgical); two others are among the top twenty (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner).
The School of Medicine is ranked #23 among 145 research- intensive medical schools surveyed.
Both the UVA Medical Center and Martha Jefferson Hospital have been awarded Magnet Status, a distinction held by only about 3% of the nation’s hospitals. Magnet Status is based upon the quality of nursing care.
