The Charlottesville community abounds with holiday activities for all ages to help you enjoy the season. Start the season off with the Lighting of the Lawn. This is a relatively new tradition started in 2001 which brings the University of Virginia community and Charlottesville and Albemarle residents together to enjoy the illumination of the Rotunda, the heart of Thomas Jefferson’s historic university. The beautiful renovated Paramount Theater has a variety of holiday entertainment to appeal to all tastes and ages. The selection includes The Second City’s Dysfunctional Holiday Review, A Christmas Gift with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Pied Pipers, Nebraska Theater Caravan: A Christmas Carol, and The Charlottesville Oratorio Society joined by a professional orchestra signing traditional seasonal favorites including a special production of The Twelve Days of Christmas. To continue your holiday of entertainment don’t miss the Four County Players production of Miracle on 34th Street. A don’t miss for all of us with a sweet tooth is the Virginia Gingerbread Christmas held at Sage Moon Gallery. Residents can make or view gingerbread houses and finally gingerbread houses will be auctioned with the recipient being the Children’s Cancer Center at the University of Virginia Hospital. Another charity event is the toy lift which has been an annnual tradition since 1988. To participate bring a new toy or donation of money to Fashion Square Mall on Dec. 7; the event has expanded to include food, entertainment and media coverage. For the wine lovers among us many of the area wineries hold holiday open houses. To find out a list of area wineries and events go to www.virginiawine.org. Be sure to visit Monticello and Ashlawn Highlands to see those homes all dressed up with the decorations of the period. While you are at Ashlawn Highlands you can cut your own Christmas tree. In addition on December 27 , at Ashlawn Highland is the Sounds of the Season Holiday concert consisting of traditional instrumentals and carols to sing-a-long with. Finally end your holiday season by attending First Night Virginia’s celebration. First Night Virginia which is celebrating its 26th year is the second oldest of the 130 worldwide New Years Eve celebrations. It consists of 60 different performances in 15 different venues all on on New Years Eve. What a wonderful way to kick off the New Year!
